What’s Chiaroscuro anyway?

A one minute read and a video clip from my current dog portrait…

If you’ve been following my art journey, you probably know by now that I’ve settled on the Chiaroscuro style of painting.

There are a million reasons why I love this style and it’s all about the drama and bold contrast. It’s also a very old style and fits perfectly with the classical grisaille technique that I use.

Chiaroscuro is basically the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, and is a well known term in art, photography and cinema.

There’s a long visual history associated with chiaroscuro which I wont bore you with here, instead, here’s a link to wiki if you want to read more; here are some examples of Chiaroscuro in art, photography and cinema.

Some examples from my ‘Still Life’ paintings.
